-------
The Komitas Quartet is a string quartet founded in November 1924, and is the oldest-established string quartet in the world still performing. It is now in the third and fourth generation of membership.
It gave its first performance on 1 March 1925. The group was awarded the name of Komitas by the Armenian Government in 1932. Komitas was a monk whose genius brought a renaissance to the Armenian music at the turn of the 20th century.
The Komitas Quartet made incredible progress in a short amount of time. From the early period of its activity, the Komitas Quartet actively promoted quartet music by various composers. The repertoire of the Komitas Quartet is very rich and includes some great examples of Western and Russian classical music by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Ravel, Debussy, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and others. The Komitas Quartet also gave the first performances of many works for string quartet.
Through its close connection to the musical world of Armenians, the Komitas Quartet inspired the birth of this "new" field for Armenian music; its activity promoted the development of Armenian quartet music. In addition to compositions by Aro Stepanian, Edgar Oganessian, Alexander Arutunian, Edward Mirzoyan, and others, arrangements of Komitas' songs are an inseparable part of the repertoire of the Komitas Quartet. The composer of these wonderful quartet arrangements is Sergey Aslamazian, the co-founder and cellist of the Komitas Quartet. He also arranged Handel's Passacaglia, Paganini's 24 caprices and Grieg's Solvejg's Song. The Komitas Quartet has frequently performed with world-famous musicians, including Gilels, Richter, Shostakovich, Rostropovich, Merzhanov, Perlman, Zeufert, Brunello and others.
During its uninterrupted creative life, celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2014, the quartet has become well known throughout the world, taking part in numerous international festivals, giving concerts in more than 80 countries, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Japan, Canada, the USA, and demonstrating the highest standards of performance. Aram Khachaturian described the quartet as the jewel of Armenian musical culture. Many Armenian and foreign composers have dedicated works to the quartet. The quartet won USSR State Prize and Armenian SSR State Prize. The latest award is St. Mesrop Mashtots order given in 2010 by the President of Armenia to Eduard Tadevosyan, current artistic director since 1976.
